Weather conditions are for some of us just irrelevant: wind, rain, sun, but are essential elements for those who see them as a science and have the knowledge to take advantage of them here, on the Wine Road, in Prahova. We are talking about all those who in an act of creation and effort go above and beyond to offer special wines year after year.
Local residents live as an extension of their vineyards. They are people blessed with the virtue of hard work, patience, and a passion for wine.
But why is Dealu Mare considered to be the “Bordeaux” or even the “Tuscany” of Romania?
Pampered by the sun, Dealu Mare vineyard stretches over a compact area of 7 km and almost 14,500 hectares, in the hillside area of the Southern Carpathians, between Teleajen and Buzau rivers.
Dealu Mare has 83 localities spread over the administrative territories of the counties of Prahova and Buzău and eight regional names, brands: Boldești, Valea Călugărească, Urlați, Ceptura, Tohani, Merei, Zorești and Breaza.
Located at 45 degrees north latitude, in similar conditions to Bordeaux or Tuscany, Dealu Mare has the Mediterranean microclimate, giving the area the possibility to grow even fig and almond trees, but here grapevine is the one that has real special growing conditions.
Grapes and people alike enjoy the sun, an average of 14 more days a year than in other areas of the country. Grape berries have more time for qualitative accumulations and are harvested only in late autumn, when the fat, clayey, sandy soil and the generosity of the sun have already filled them abundantly with a unique sweetness and aroma.
The extremes of the Eastern European continent are reduced in this area by the protection of the Subcarpathian hills from cold currents and by promoting the penetration of warm air masses of Mediterranean origin along the Subcarpathians.
